Pond Edging!

Keep in mind that pond edging has its function. It is designed to sustain foot traffic!

Before rubber liner is placed into the pond, you are going to build pond edging. But what types of edging should you choose? It depends on the type of pond you are building.

Strict shapes are good for the formal design, but we will be discussing an informal pond design, where pond edging can be built with pond rocks, flat stone or various sizes of fieldstone, plain turf, or whatever will strike you. Keep in mind however, that the edging is also designed to sustain foot traffic!

I want to tell you why, of all the choices available to me, I chose Oly-Ola.

Look at this picture. The way the ground was leveled and pond excavation done, my pond would continue to grow larger and larger. I had to stop at the size I had.

Dick Schuck from Maryland Aquatic Nurseries advised me to create Garden Style pond edging with the use of Super-Edg or Edg-Keeper from Oly-Ola.

Either one installed on top of the pond will allow water line to be completely leveled with the ground while hiding the pond liner completely under the pond rocks.

My wife suggested that she didn’t like to see pond rocks arranged like a stone necklace and wanted to see as natural as possible. Super-Edg was going to be the easiest and cleanest installation.

Here are some methods you can incorporate in your pond edging:

  • This first is very basic.

  • This method incorporates a soft transition shelf, which hides lined edging. To learn more about this method, read the article written by Stuart Schuck and titled "The Softer Side of Pond Transition"...

  • In this method, the rocks are added to basic design.

  • The Oly-Ola Super-Edg is 6” wide. By mounting it to the stakes about 12” from the current dirt edge, it would allow me to create an extra shelf. Next, I purchased 36, 1-1/2” x 30” galvanized pipes. Using a heavy hammer, I drove each stake 25” deep into the ground while keeping them roughly 20” apart.

I clamped Super-Edg flat edging to each pipe and drilled 2 holes all the way through. Next, I attached flat edging to each pipe with carriage bolts and nuts. Once all of them were in place, I tightly fastened it.

Now I was looking at a solid and very strong edging that would support heavy load of pond rocks and foot traffic. And the best part of it – it can also be lowered or raised by changing it’s bolt location on the pipe or by simply raising or lowering the pipe or galvanize stake. This adjustability would allow me to achieve a perfectly level edge.

Next trick was to make one side slightly lower to allow access water drainage. The opposite side of the waterfall and toward the slope was a good choice. I used a bubble level and set it slightly of center by ½”. With such a slight level change, it was perfect!

I was ready for the next step – pond liner installation!
