Pond Liner!

I am just about ready to install the pond liner.
After spending enough time tamping down the dirt to stabilize it, I added play sand to the bottom of the pond to make it slightly softer. If I should step on it while cleaning the pond, the pressure applied wouldn’t puncture the rubber liner.

Well, the bottom is protected. But how do I protect shelves and walls?

At the time I didn’t know I could use the underliner, which offers additional protection. Luckily for me, my neighbors replaced the carpet in their house and I was able to use their old one to cover the surface of my pond entirely.

I bought a highly recommended Firestone PondGuard 45 mil EPDM rubber liner. It’s well known for its durability, fish safety and long life.

It was also properly calculated to fit my pond.

With my wife’s help, the pond liner was finally in. While waiting for 3,000 gallons to fill the pond I had a little time to take it easy.

As the water level increased, little by little I stretched the liner and folded in some places to help to lie-in tightly. As soon as water level reached the top of pond edging, I folded remainder of the liner over the edge and backfill with topsoil.

Wrong move! Inexperienced in pond construction, I finished installing it without any consideration for the pond skimmer. This mistake actually cost me in the end. It didn’t work as well as I planned and I had plenty of algae to deal with until I finally added the pond skimmer.

Make sure that you make provisions for your filtration system, especially such things as skimmers, waterfall tanks, etc. When you complete installation of those things, only than backfill with dirt to cover the rest of the pond liner and add rocks....
