Quarantine Treatment!

Before adding new fish to your pond, it is wise to do quarantine treatment for several weeks.

Unless you are able to buy the fish from a reputable dealer who keeps fish in quarantine tanks and regularly treats it for water parasites. In this case you can feel comfortable to release the fish into the pond right out of the bag.

Salt treatment is a good method to kill parasites and also mitigates the ill effect of nitrites on fish.

Should you use quarantine tanks with no plants, maintain .5% or 5 lbs of salt level concentration per 100 gallons. Keep this level on an ongoing basis.

The salt treatment helps to promote good fish slime coating, which is necessary for general well being.

Dick Schuck, from Maryland Aquatic Nurseries, told me a story about good friend of his, who imports very expensive Koi from Japan. To protect his fish, he is using rather aggressive quarantine treatment. The treatment is short and kills parasites that may be infesting the Koi.

He is using .37% Formalin at a dosage rate of 150 ppm or 7.5 ounces per 400 gallons (slightly less than 2 ounces per 100 gallons). The treatment is limited to a maximum of 1 hour!

Important:

  • To make sure that water has good aeration while treating the fish

  • Constantly observe fish behavior. If any roll over (a sign of imminent death), remove immediately and place it into the un-treated water.

  • Remove all fish after 1 hour of treatment.

  • Tip:
Good water quality contributes to good fish health. Since plants improve water quality, use lots of plants in your pond.
