Shade Tolerant!

Although most aquatic plants require a good deal of sunshine, there are some that are more shade tolerant than most.

Of course shade density, just how sunlight-free a given area is, will determine how well even these plants will do.




Caltha palustris
(Marsh Marigold)

1’ – Flowers April
Zone 3

Intense golden-yellow flowers brighten the pond in early spring.

Prefers cold climate, light shade or cool running water like spring seeps and streams.




Cephalanthus occidentalis
(Button Bush)

6’ to 8’ - Flowers May, June
Zone 4

Attractive glossy foliage on reddish brown branches.

White button-like flowers give way to interesting round seed heads.




Cyperus alternifolius
(Umbrella Palm)


Zone 8

An all time favorite featuring umbrella-like foliage above stiff stems.

Easy to winter indoors.
Takes some shade.

Great for natural filters, it really thrives in moving water.

A smaller, narrow leaved version of umbrella palm.

More erect habit.
Compact and easy to grow.
Well suited to any size pond.

A popular favorite.

Huge melon-shape dark green leaves.

Long arched stems covered with clusters of large white Sagittaria-like flowers.
Vivaparous.

Graceful, soft sweeping stems create an almost fern-like appearance.

Individual stems resemble a small uniform needle tree.
Deciduous.

Thrives in moist soil to shallow water and loves shade.

Multicolored red, blue-green and yellow heart-shaped leaves.

White flowers.
Leaf colors vary with the amount of sunlight.

Prefers some shade.

Creeping ground cover great for edge of the pond.

Sky blue flowers.

Performs best in part shade, streams or spring seeps.

Unique white and gold flowers held high above waxy-green foliage.

North American Native.
Tolerates some shade.

Requires very little care.

Pink is outstanding in the spring and fall.
